Frequently Asked Questions About Ceramic Planters

Do these ceramic pots come with drainage holes?

+

Ceramic pots and planters need drainage holes to prevent water buildup and root rot.

Even more porous types of ceramic pottery–such as terracotta–are best for plants when they have a drainage hole. This is because the drainage hole allows water to circulate in the pot (and water movement is key to providing oxygen to the plant). For this reason, all of the ceramic pots available from Ten Thousand Pots come with drainage holes in place.

How long do ceramic flower pots last?

+

High-quality Vietnamese-style ceramic pots can last many years–even decades–if properly cared for and protected from impact and extreme freeze-and-thaw conditions. Ceramic pots of this kind have a thick, dense wall (about 1-2 inches in width) and a heavy glaze coloring that doesn’t fade over time.

Do ceramic planters fade in the sun?

+

Vietnamese ceramic plant pots have a thick, syrupy glaze baked into the ceramic. As a result, these kinds of pots do not fade in sunlight. In contrast, Talavera pots have a much thinner layer of paint that fades over the years when consistently exposed to sunlight.

What are the different sizes of ceramic planters?

+

Ceramic planters typically range from 4 to 6 inches in diameter for small plants (and small spaces) to over 30” in diameter for shrubs, trees, and feature plants–with many intermediate sizes available.

The ceramic pot with the largest diameter we sell has a 41” diameter at the top. The tallest ceramic planter Ten Thousand Pots has available is more than 45” tall.

Are ceramic planters heavy?

+

In general, ceramic plant containers are heavier than fiberglass and fiberstone pots–but they are lighter compared to cement/concrete planters.

The heaviness of ceramic pots depends on the specific type of pottery. Vietnamese-style ceramic plant pots are heavier than Italian terracotta, for example. Italian terracotta, in turn, tends to weigh more than Talavera pottery. The table below illustrates this using the example of a pot that has a 14” diameter x 14” height:

Type of ceramic planter Weight of 14"D x 14"H cone-shaped pot
Vietnamese ceramic pot 27 lbs
Italian terracotta 12 lbs
Talavera 6 lbs

Are glazed ceramic planters better than unglazed pots?

+

It depends on what you’re growing in the pot!

High-fired glazed ceramic pots retain slightly more moisture compared to their unglazed counterparts–so they’re best-suited for moisture-loving plants. (This is because the glaze effectively turns into a glass coating during the scorching-hot temperature of the pottery production process.)

On the other hand, unglazed clay pots are a little more breathable and let moisture escape more quickly–so they function better for drought-tolerant plants.

Can ceramic planters be used indoors and outdoors?

+

Generally speaking, ceramic planters are suitable for routine use both indoors and outdoors. However, there are a few key points to keep in mind:

  • Size relative to available space: Large ceramic pots are better suited for outdoor use in cases where indoor spaces are comparatively small and restricted.
  • Seasonal weather: Not all ceramic planters are frost-resistant. For example, porous pots (like terracotta) absorb more water—which then expands during freezing temperatures, resulting in breakage. On the other hand, Vietnamese-style ceramic flower pots (which are fired at a high temperature and have very thick walls) are significantly more durable in freezing conditions.
  • Sunlight exposure: Some ceramic pottery, such as Talavera, is finished with a thin layer of paint. This paint can gradually fade when exposed to the sun, so keeping the pottery indoors helps it retain its original appearance for years.
